Understanding Your Facebook Timeline or Profile Page - 2014 Edition

Now that you created your Facebook profile, and updated your Facebook privacy settings, let's learn a little about your profile page, or timeline page.

In late 2011 Facebook introduced the cover photo, a much larger photo space on the profile page. They also changed the profile to be your personal timeline of everything that had been posted about you on Facebook.

This post will explain the main areas of your profile so you understand what your visitors will see when they look at your personal timeline, or profile, page.

Photo Area - Profile Photo and Cover Photo

Example Facebook Profile

Your profile photo is selected when you create your Facebook profile. This photo will also be sized down to a tiny 40 X 40 pixel image that is included with your status updates in timelines and news-feeds.

The size of your profile photo will be 160 X 160 pixels. Facebook will ask you  to upload an image at least 180 X 180 pixels which you can then crop to to a square. starting with a square photo is easiest. You can hover over the profile photo at any time to change it.

The Facebook cover photo is where you get a little more area to express yourself. This feature most likely came about when brands really started to get active on Facebook.

Your cover photo area will be 851 pixels wide and 315 pixels high. When you upload a photo try to pick a larger photo, around 720 pixels wide will work best.

Pick a photo that is fun, expresses your personality and that also looks good next to your profile photo. You can hover over the cover photo at any time to change it.

You will also see two buttons in your photo area, Update Info and Activity Log. Update Info lets you add to or change your personal information and interests. More on that later. Activity log allows you to view everything you have done on Facebook in a scrolling timeline format. This includes all of the actions you have taken on other pages or profiles.

Facebook Profile Tabs

Example Facebook Profile

These tabs allow your profile visitors to find out a little more about you. The default view is your timeline.

The about tab takes visitors to a full view page about you. It will include all of your work and education, places you've lived, your birthday and marital status as well as your contact information.

All of your photos, friends,  likes and interests will also be featured on this about you page.

The photos tab contains all photos that exist of you on Facebook. You can view them by:

  • Photos of you - these are mostly photos added to timelines, your or your friends, in which you were tagged
  • Your photos - these are photos you have uploaded
  • Albums - these are photos you uploaded and grouped into albums. You start with a profile photo and a cover photo album
  • Not tagged - these are photos that Facebook's facial recognition software used to determine you might know someone in the photo and wish to tag them

Your friends tab allows visitors to browse your friends list. This is helpful when you start and want to connect to more people.

The more tab allows you or your visitors to quickly jump to a particular section of your likes (TV Shows or Movies for instance) or apps that you are using (Foursquare or Twitter for example).

All About You

Example Facebook Profile

This section on the left makes contains a longer scrolling view of all of the information on the About tab. The information is summarized first under "About". where you work, went to school, live, are from and who you may be married to.

You can choose to not include information here if you wish. It is up to you and how much you wish to reveal online. Remember though you can also control who can see this information by going to your privacy settings page.

Personally, I feel, the location is the most valuable part of your profile. This will allow you to have a list of your friends in the same location which will be useful later on.

Your photos are next, followed by your friends, your places and then your interests and likes.

Facebook will always customize this view for your visitors. For example, the friends will first show friends you have in common.

Post a Status Update

Example Facebook Profile

This is how you, or your friends if you allow, can post status updates to Facebook.

You can insert an image, tag friends, add a date, add emotion, or just post a plain text update. Facebook now also allows you to edit or delete your status. Note that if you edit your status it will have an edited label for others to see.

Click inside the "What's on your mind?" area to see your options.

As you can see some additional options appear. This is where you can (from left to right on the bottom of the option box) tag a friend, set the date, add a location, add a photo, or add an emotion.

To the right, before clicking "Post", consider who you want to share this with. This is based on the settings you made on your privacy settings page. You can change it per post. Also, Facebook seems to often remember your previous preference. Don't forget to check this each time.

Your Personal Timeline

Example Facebook Profile

Below the status box is where your personal timeline will appear. right now it is blank. Eventually this will show a long scrolling history of your updates to Facebook. Over time Facebook will group these automatically so their page can load faster.

Facebook has also allowed you to enhance your timeline with Milestones. You can upload larger photos and add more detail around major events in your life, like a weeding or welcoming a baby.

Invite Your Friends To See Your Profile!

Now that you understand your profile and have filled it out a little more you can share it with friends. Click your "Friends" tab, then in the right side of that box select "Find Friends". Grow your friend list and show off your profile.

You will also be able to see your items and your friends items in your Facebook News Feed.

Thanks for following along and don't forget to Be Mohr Social!
